What Are Briquettes?
Briquettes are a type of biomass fuel made of compressed recycled wood waste, suitable for burning in most appliances. They are also known as heat logs, eco logs, fire blocks, and fire bricks.
How are Briquettes Made?
Much like wood pellets, briquettes are made from the sawdust or fibres from virgin wood (meaning that it’s untreated) that would otherwise get thrown away in the timber industry, making it an efficient form of bioenergy that reduces the waste output as well as being a sustainable fuel. These wood fibres are most likely to be softwoods, but sometimes will be combined with hardwoods.
To create the briquette, the wood is then compressed at high pressure into its briquette shape until the fibres bind together. It holds its shape naturally without additional chemicals or binding agents, meaning that it won’t damage your appliance and is safe to burn. It’s not just diamonds that are made under pressure!
Next, the briquette is put into a kiln and dried until it reaches moisture levels below 20%, which is the maximum moisture content required to be labelled as ‘Ready to Burn’ by Woodsure. Most briquettes are extremely dry and surpass the 20% mark – White Horse Energy’s briquettes have moisture levels below 10%.
Why are Briquettes a Good Alternative?
The compression and kilning process ensures that the briquette is highly dense and packed with energy, meaning that it burns for longer and usually with a greater heat output than firewood – as much as 50% hotter per pound spent.
One of the best features of the briquette is that it produces very little ash and smoke when burned. It’ll be much easier to maintain your appliance, and reducing smoke is beneficial when improving the air quality, while also being less irritating for nearby neighbours if you choose to light a fire outside.
Overall, this is a fuel that not only lasts longer but will help your appliance last longer too.
Briquette Storage
Briquettes are stackable – 96 bags can be fitted onto one pallet – and come in 10kg bags to make transferring them to your storage space easier.
Briquettes need to be stored in a dry place, ideally indoors, so that they retain their quality before use. If moisture gets into them, they’ll expand and break apart – much like a pellet – into their previous uncompressed state which makes them unsuitable to burn. We recommend putting them in a log basket next to your hearth or an outhouse where no water gets in.
Avoid putting them in a typical log store, as these have gaps for ventilation since air circulation is necessary for drying firewood properly. While this benefits firewood logs, any exposure to moisture in the air could permanently alter the structure of the briquette. If you must store them somewhere outdoors, then make sure they’re raised off the ground and have a waterproof cover on them. Make sure to cover them even if they are still wrapped in the plastic packaging, as they aren’t always completely sealed.
Which Briquette is Right for You?
Choosing a heat log is just as important as choosing firewood, depending on your use case and your appliance. Read on for the comprehensive guide, explaining the features of each briquette and our recommendations for each one.
Nestro
Known as our longest burning briquette, the Nestro log is our bestseller and it’s easy to see why. When you’re seeking a reliable source of heat and a clean burn, Nestro will deliver. They are compacted into a cylindrical shape and the high density of this slightly chunkier briquette means that they have a significant energy output and will expand when burned. Its minimal ash content makes it easier to clear out and maintain your appliance.
Nestro is the ideal option for people that rely on wood burners as a main heating source in their homes. We recommend that you add Nestro to an already lit source, by starting with firelighters and kindling. Once the fire is burning, you won’t have to get up from your seat to refuel it for a long while.
RUF
Being our best value briquette, the RUF is suitable for all budgets and all homes. This briquette’s small brick shape makes it stackable and suitable for all storage spaces. It’s easy to break and light, which means that you won’t be caught in a tight spot if you find yourself in need of heat and light in a snap.
Because of its size, it’s a great choice for smaller stoves and log burners and it’s so light that you’ll be able to take it anywhere. You should always have a pack of these stored in your car boot or your log store.

Why Burn Briquettes?
Ecoblaze Aspen Briquettes are designed to burn low and slow providing you with a consistently comfortable level of warmth while they are in use. Ecoblaze Aspen Briquettes are sourced from responsibly managed plantations, and the manufacturing process does not include the use of any chemical ingredients.
Our Briquettes are compressed with extremely high forces and can achieve densities of more than 1,000 kg/m3. The results of this process are that Ecoblaze Aspen Briquettes have a high calorific content, maintain their form when burning, and produce a lot of heat (up to 50% hotter than firewood).
Ecoblaze Aspen Briquettes At A Glance
If you are new to Ecoblaze Aspen Briquettes here is what you need to get up to speed:
- Ecoblaze Aspen Briquettes have a high calorific content which creates a long, hot, consistent burn.
- A practical and inexpensive way to maintain your fire’s heat output consistently throughout the night.
- Our Ecoblaze Aspen Briquettes are typically <6% moisture content.
- Uniform size, compact, easy to store and move.
- Wood briquettes burn up to 50% hotter than firewood alone.
- Our Ecoblaze Aspen Briquettes are produced to do no harm to the surrounding ecosystem.
Are best suited to being added to an existing fire, for a long, slow, consistent burn. However, Ecoblaze Aspen Briquettes can also be broken into smaller pieces and used to start a new fire too.
As they are so dense, they will need more help to get going without an existing fire to start the burn, a good handful of extra Ecoblaze kindling should do the job, then sit back and enjoy benefit of their long hours of heat.
Dive Into The Detail
Briquettes for fuel may be manufactured from almost any kind of biomass material, such as hardwood, softwood, straw, bracken, paper, coffee, canola, and more.
Briquettes made of compressed wood are more energy-efficient than logs, since they are both dry and rich in energy (calories).
When making briquettes, the term “compression” refers to the amount of pressure applied to the material throughout the process. Ecoblaze Aspen Briquettes have a higher compression, which results in a denser and less dusty product.
Ecoblaze Aspen Briquettes have a wide range of applications; you may use them in wood-burning stoves, log burners, protected fire pits, chimineas, and so on. They are the ideal supplement to hardwood heat logs as well as conventional logs used in fireplaces
Our Commitment To Quality
Briquettes of low cost will almost always have a high dust content. This is because they are produced by machines of poor quality, that operate at low compression levels. The result is a poor quality product, with a lesser burn quality and more mess, as this can discourage people from burning briquettes we steer clear of them.
Our Ecoblaze Aspen Briquettes are sourced from sustainable, responsibly managed plantations. They are compressed to achieve densities of more than 1,000 kg/m3, creating an incredibly dense, high calory, quality product.
Our customers return to us, not only because of our competitive pricing, but also because of our commitment to ensuring they can rely on us for the best quality product available, consistently.
Try them for yourself, Ecoblaze Aspen Briquettes can be ordered as a bulk pallet delivery, or as single convenient next day delivery packages.

Briquettes Can Help Keep The House Warm, And The Heating Off This Winter
Briquettes are the greatest supplement for any wood burning stove, and log store. They allow you to maintain the room temperature for long periods without the need to top them up or feed them oxygen.
This means, you use fewer firewood logs to get your home up to temperature, so there’s less need to re-stock the log store as often, and helps to resist turning on the central heating for longer.
Our team have been using briquettes for years, so to cut through the jargon, here’s what we’ve learned:
At a glance: Ready to burn <6% moisture, incredibly dense, 100% natural product (compressed aspen bark). Excellent all-rounder.
Best for: Keeping the central heating off!
How to use: Add to the dying, end-of-the-night fire, and shut off the air vents to smoulder until morning.
Why buy me: Use two/three per night to keep the room warm, the embers last for hours, so prevent the need to use more firewood to heat the house from a ‘cold start’, this will extend your log store, and keep the central heating off for longer!
At a glance: Ready to burn <12% moisture, kiln dried, easy to store and stack, a carbon neutral wood fuel.
Best for: Value, 12 briquettes per 10kg pack, around £4.00 per bag is simply unbeatable value.
How to use: Same as you would firewood, can also be broken down and used as its own kindling to start the fire.
Why buy me: Totally self-sufficient, can be lit by crumbling them up, so without the need for kindling or even firelighters. Easy storage, a uniform shape, very easy to stack, store, and will fit into any size wood stove.
Why We Love Burning Briquettes
In a word, versatility.
Due to their high calorific value, thanks to the incredible compression – briquettes of all kinds, contain within them a huge amount of heat potential, it’s all about how you want to use that to fit your needs.
Briquettes can burn intensely, producing a far higher heat output than firewood alone, if you add them to an existing fire, and keep the air flows open.
This will make them behave more like firewood, they won’t last overnight in this way, but it means you can leave the fire to burn intensely for around 2hrs without tending, rather than every 45mins with wood alone.
Briquettes can also burn low and slow, smouldering briquettes by adding them to a dying fire is the best way to maintain an ambient temperature over long periods (overnight), the embers will be all that are left after around 8hrs, so you can add kindling and re-light the fire quickly the next day.
Burning this way, requires you to limit airflow to a minimum level, in so doing, this can create a layer of black residue on your stove door, this is due to the lower temperature burn and nothing to worry about. It wipes off easily with warm water, or you can burn it off by re-lighting the fire with firewood.
